Ayah’s dreams: “I’ll go back to Syria and build a school!”

Dreams to travel around the world and visit Japan. But unlike other teenagers, she also dreams of returning to her beloved homeland, Syria, a homeland that she has been forced to flee due to civil unrest. Once back, her biggest dream is to build a school.

As a Syrian refugee living in Lebanon, life isn’t easy for Ayah and her family – her parents, two sisters and baby niece. Not only do they have to purchase all of their water for cooking, washing and cleaning, but they often go without basic everyday essentials, such as soap and shampoo.

Despite these difficulties, Ayah smiles and laughs with such ease you would find it difficult to believe she’s been living like this for five years. Her optimism makes her popular with the rest of the children in her compound, especially the girls who look forward to the fun activities she organises every week.

The potential of a woman

Ayah isn’t just a beacon of hope among young refugee girls living in Aramoun compound. Having taught herself English and Japanese, she represents the extraordinary potential that millions of girls across the world possess if given a chance.

But this potential is often stunted when girls are unable to access education due to the absence of safe spaces for sanitation and appropriate feminine hygiene products during their periods. This means that every month during their menstruation, girls are missing out on the opportunity to pursue their dreams simply because they are deprived of appropriate hygiene products to manage their period and encourage them to attend school.

With your help, we can restore the dreams of thousands of refugee girls, like Ayah, living in Lebanon or IDP camps in Syria through our hygiene packs. Our packs contain everything that girls and women need to manage their period in a sanitary manner and include a menstrual cup/pack of sanitary towels, soap, shampoo and underwear.
